What to Expect

We understand that pursuing an evaluation can feel like a big step. Whether you’re seeking answers for yourself, your child, or a loved one, our goal is to make the process clear, collaborative, and supportive from start to finish.

At Elements Psychological Services, every neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluation is tailored to your unique concerns, questions, and goals. While no two evaluations are exactly alike, most follow the same general process. 

Prior to your first appointment, you will have received a Welcome E-mail with the date and time of your first appointment, the estimated cost of the evaluation, the payment structure, and a general orientation to Elements. 

This e-mail can be referenced for our phone number, address, our EHR (Simple Practice), and anything other pertinent information.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

The evaluation process begins with a comprehensive intake appointment.

During this meeting, we’ll discuss:

  • Your current concerns and goals
  • Relevant developmental, educational, medical, and mental health history
  • Strengths, challenges, and areas of concern
  • Previous evaluations, therapies, or interventions
  • Questions you hope the evaluation will answer

This information helps us determine the most appropriate testing plan and ensures that the evaluation is personalized to your needs.

Preparing for Your Evaluation

The best preparation is simple: come rested, comfortable, and ready to do your best.

The Night Before

✓ Get a good night’s sleep

✓ Eat a normal dinner and stay hydrated

✓ Continue taking prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise

✓ Avoid excessive caffeine, alcohol, or recreational substances

✓ Gather any requested paperwork, records, or completed questionnaires

✓ Try not to “study” or prepare for the evaluation

This is not a test you can cram for. We want to understand your natural strengths, challenges, and ways of thinking, so the most helpful thing you can do is arrive as your authentic self.

The Day of Testing

✓ Eat breakfast or lunch beforehand

✓ Bring water and any snacks you may need

✓ Wear comfortable clothing

✓ Bring glasses, hearing aids, or other assistive devices if you use them

✓ Take medications as prescribed unless we’ve discussed something different

✓ Arrive a few minutes early to get settled

For children, it can be helpful to describe the appointment as a series of activities designed to help us learn how their brain works. Avoid framing the evaluation as a test they need to pass or perform well on.

What If I’m Nervous?

Feeling nervous is completely normal. Many clients worry about “doing well” or getting the “right answers.”

There are no right or wrong outcomes in a neuropsychological or psychoeducational evaluation. The goal is simply to understand how you think, learn, process information, and navigate daily life. The more naturally you approach the process, the more helpful and accurate the results will be.

Step 2: Testing

Testing is completed in a comfortable, supportive environment and is designed to gather information about how an individual thinks, learns, processes information, and functions in daily life.

Depending on the referral questions, testing may include activities that assess:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Executive functioning
  • Learning and memory
  • Problem-solving and reasoning
  • Language skills
  • Processing speed
  • Academic skills
  • Emotional and behavioral functioning

There are no grades, no preparation required, and no way to “pass” or “fail.” The purpose of testing is simply to better understand an individual’s unique profile of strengths and support needs.

How long does testing take?

Most evaluations are completed in 2–3 testing sessions, taking 2-3 hours each session. Occasionally, testing sessions may be shortened due to factors beyond anyone’s control (such as fatigue or stamina).  To ensure that we get the most accurate and complete data, we may need to add an additional session.

Rest assured, the number of testing sessions does not affect the outcome of the evaluation. Whether testing is completed in two, three, or four sessions, the referral question(s) will be fully addressed, and recommendations will be based on the complete evaluation findings. The psychologist you are working with will keep you informed regularly (likely after each session is completed) so you can prepare accordingly.

Step 3: Questionnaires & Records Review

As part of the evaluation process, we often gather information from multiple sources to ensure we have a complete picture.

This may include:

  • Parent, teacher, partner, or self-report questionnaires
  • School records and report cards
  • Previous evaluations
  • Medical records
  • Therapy or treatment records

Looking at information across multiple settings helps us better understand patterns of functioning and how concerns may be impacting everyday life.

Step 4: Analysis & Interpretation

After testing is complete, we carefully review and integrate all of the information collected throughout the evaluation.

This includes:

  • Test results
  • Clinical interviews
  • Behavioral observations
  • Questionnaires
  • Relevant records

Rather than focusing on individual scores alone, we examine patterns across multiple areas to develop a comprehensive understanding of strengths, challenges, and support needs.

Step 5: Feedback Session

Once the evaluation has been completed and interpreted, we’ll meet to review the findings together.

During the feedback session, we will discuss:

✓ Key findings

✓ Areas of strength

✓ Areas of challenge

✓ Diagnoses, if applicable

✓ Personalized recommendations

✓ Next steps and available supports

Our goal is for you to leave the meeting with a clear understanding of the results and confidence about how to move forward.

Step 6: Comprehensive Written Report

Following the feedback session, you will receive a detailed written report that summarizes the evaluation findings and recommendations.

Reports typically include:

  • Background information
  • Assessment results
  • Diagnostic impressions (when applicable)
  • Strengths and support needs
  • Personalized recommendations
  • Educational, workplace, and daily-life supports
  • Resources and next steps

The report can be shared with schools, healthcare providers, therapists, disability services offices, colleges, employers, or other professionals involved in care, as appropriate.
